My Japanese studies so far have been limited to my own wading through "Japanese for Busy People (Kana version)" and Kodansha's Hirigana Japanese Dictionary.
Seeing as how where I live, people don't understand that I want to learn the language and work for some big company as a translator/culture consultant someday. Rarrrgh.
My best friend has gotten a bit farther than I (I forwarded her your question about writing 'Sherlock Holmes' in Japanese--she agreed that since we don't even pronounce the 'l' there's no extra 'ru' which makes it 'Sherokku Homzu'). She's actually started learning some kanji, but I haven't even attempted to do anything like that. *le sigh*
